Happy Christmas from South Dublin Vets

christmas-1-l

Welcome to our Christmas edition of South Dublin Vets newsletter!! We hope that it finds you all enjoying getting ready for the festivities!! Here at South Dublin Vets we are all excited about Christmas and we sincerely hope that Santa brings all our lovely pets something nice this year!

We had another busy year and we feel that we were privileged to look after all your pets and although sadly we had to bid farewell to some old favorites, we welcomed new pets that we hope to ensure their health and well-being into the future.

We lost our dear and much loved colleague, Edyta, last summer. 2017 will see the inaugural Edyta Keeling Painting Competition for our younger clients. More on that in our Spring issue.

We feel that the new microchipping regulations are having a positive effect on responsible pet ownership. There were also successes in catching puppies at the ports destined for the European market and hopefully in time with the increased vigilance that the new regulations bring, puppy farms will become a thing of the past.

Safe & Happy Christmas

christmas-3-lThis is a really great time of year – whether it’s catching up with friends or family or just getting a well-earned rest in a house full of food!! We can all unfortunately fall into bad habits which we pay for in the New Year! However we would just remind you all to be mindful of all the extra things and foodstuffs that could be dangerous to your pets.

Christmas lights and decorations can prove irresistible, particularly to puppies and kittens. It is always best to leave the lower branches of the tree bare and to supervise if at all possible! If a kitten runs up a tree it actually doesn’t take much to topple over!!

There are lots of yummy treats at this time of year for us humans. However you have to be very careful with our animal friends. The only thing that we could possibly advocate as a treat is a little bit of plain turkey breast.

Most of the human food eaten at Christmas can potentially be dangerous so play it safe and keep it well away from your pets. Mince pies, Christmas pudding and cake, stuffing, chocolate and anything with raisins or dried fruit is particularly harmful and should be avoided at all cost.

Hopefully the weather will be good over the festive season so it should be good for long afternoon walks to burn off all that Christmas excess!!

Flea and Tick medication

christmas-4-lWe would like to remind you all that all of our internal and external bugs are still out there this winter! Milder winters and central heating make excellent breeding grounds for them all!

We would continue to recommend monthly worming to ensure lungworm prevention and then flea and tick treatment every three months with our new tablet or monthly with the spot on application.

There have been a few reports on social media recently concerning the safety and efficacy of our new flea and tick tablet. We would like to reassure you that we ourselves have looked into it thoroughly having spoken to specialist veterinary surgeons in University College Dublin and in the UK. They confirm that it is an excellent drug for flea and tick treatment and that the European Medicine Agency conducted a review only 3 months ago and confirmed it’s continued approval of the product. There is a statement on the company website which you can access here: www.msd-animal-health.ie/company/company-news.aspx. If you have any further queries then please give us a call in Terenure or Dundrum on 4555362 or 2985876.
